Geography 12: November 4, 5 & 6th

 November 4th

The major topic of today was Tsunamis.  Students reviewed waves and parts of a wave and how it creates energy (text pp. 173).

Students watched the following videos, take notes, answer questions.

Questions:

Why can tsunamis cause such damage and devastation?

What are some characteristics of the wave that factor into how much damage it could cause?

How do coastal or shoreline features factor into the extent of the damage?  What role could a warning system play?

Wave Properties

  • Describe the unique properties of tsunami waves:

    • Wave height in deep ocean vs. near the shore

    • Wave speed in deep ocean vs. near the shore

Stages of a Tsunami

  • Identify and describe the four main stages of a tsunami: generation, propagation, shoaling, and inundation.

Read case study on p. 174/75 and discussed questions 1 and 2.

November 5th

Today's focus topic was plate tectonics.

We finished the class by reading p. 47-49 and p. 21-25 and completing the chart on p. 25.

November 6th

In the first half of class we reviewed plate tectonics and the theory of continental drift.  We started class by discussing the chart that we completed on page 25 on the core, mantle and crust.  We watched the following videos and took some more notes.  We completed two diagrams, one being a map of the earth and the different plates and what those plates are doing (p. 49) and one on what is happening at a fault line.

Convection currents explained in this video operate the same in the mantle.

In the second half we discussed Earthquakes.  We took several notes on Earthquakes and completed a sheet (seismology freyer diagrams sheet) on the different types of waves that come from the focus above the epicenter.  We also discussed seismographs and the Richter scale to measure magnitude and Modified Mercali scale to measure the intensity. (p. 54 & 58 in text have some info but ensure you get the notes).

On Tuesday we will be doing a lab on plate tectonics and earthquakes.
